What to look for (and look out for) in container registries
Pulling from container registries is key to ensuring the health and resilience of the CI/CD pipeline. Choose your registry with care.

There has been a lot of movement in the world of container registries lately. And, with companies increasingly betting their businesses on container builds in their CI/CD pipelines, the stakes for container registries have never been higher.
When CI/CD goes down, development grinds to a halt. That means we need to build resilience into our CI/CD systems, and the registry server is a key component for doing so. ....

Containers: Strengthen IoT Infrastructures

There’s a general consensus that containers are poised to become the dominant artifact that will be employed to run software on Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. The devil, in terms of achieving that goal any time soon, is as always in the details.
Understanding Containers
Containers enable developers to encapsulate software in a lightweight artifact that can run anywhere. That’s crucial because IoT environments are made up of a wide range of hardware that run a wide variety of operating systems. Attempting to package software in a unique way for each platform is cost prohibitive.
However, getting containers to run on an IoT platform is one thing, managing fleets of IoT platforms loaded with containerized applications is quite another. At the most basic level, IT teams need to appreciate the simple fact that IoT platforms come in all shapes and sizes   ranging from a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform deployed at the network edge to a device that requ ....

When CI/CD goes down, development grinds to a halt. That means we need to build resilience into our CI/CD systems, and the registry server is a key component for doing so.
A registry server is essentially a fancy file server that is used to store container images for Kubernetes, devops, and container-based application development. Developers can store and share container images by uploading to (pushing) and downloading from (pulling) a registry server. When a container image is pulled to a new system, the original application contained within it can be run on that system, as well. ....

Open Container Initiative Distribution Specification Reaches Version 1.0

SAN FRANCISCO, May 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/  The

The OCI Distribution Spec defines an API protocol to facilitate and standardize the distribution of content. It was launched in April 2018 to standardize container image distribution around the specification for the
The OCI distribution spec brings our community full circle, standardizing the core operations that users of containers have come to depend on, said Phil Estes, chair of the Open Container Initiative (OCI) Technical Oversight Board. The runtime spec helped us define a container and how it runs; the image spec gave us a way to package that into a container image. Both of these were significant milestones from the original OCI charter, and finalizing the OCI distribution spec today gives us a standard way to distribute images via registries and runtime tools ....

Ahead of its release next month, the Fedora community has posted details of what is coming in Fedora 34, Red Hat s bleeding-edge Linux distro.
Fedora is where Red Hat tries new features that may make their way into Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in future. While sponsored by Red Hat, it is also a community project in its own right.
Although the focus is on innovation, Fedora Workstation describes itself as a reliable, user-friendly and powerful operating system for your laptop or desktop computer . The server edition presents itself as a short-lifecycle, community-supported server operating system which is enough to deter most production use, other than for those who particularly need some new feature which it supports. ....
