Michaela B. Allen | Citizen Scientist / Graduate Student – NASA Solar System Exploration

What motivated you to volunteer as a NASA citizen scientist? How did you learn about NASA citizen science? Have you had to be creative to secure adequate computer or internet access?
Before I was a physics major in undergrad, I was really interested in astronomy and space, and I liked to keep up with everything NASA was doing. I remember reading an article about Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, a new NASA citizen science project that was getting ready to be launched where you could discover new objects in space, and that seemed really cool to me. I made an alarm for the day the project launched and got to working on it that very day. Within two weeks of the project launch, I had changed my major to physics and was spending every minute of free time classifying objects! ....

Citizen scientists help create 'most complete' 3D map of brown dwarfs in Milky Way- Technology News, Firstpost

Citizen scientists help create most complete 3D map of brown dwarfs in Milky Way
Telescopes can detect brown dwarfs because they emit heat in the form of infrared light, left over from their formation.

Citizen scientists from NASA-funded Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 have now managed to create the most complete three-dimensional map of 525 brown dwarfs in our cosmic Milky Way neighbourhood. The brown dwarfs are objects that are balls of gas not heavy enough to be stars, since they cannot power themselves through nuclear fusion the way stars do, according to a
statement from NASA. While they are named brown dwarfs, they appear magenta or orange-red if a person could see them close up. ....

Scientists create 'most complete' three-dimensional map of brown dwarfs around the Sun

Story highlights
Brown dwarfs are bigger than Jupiter-sized planets but too small for nuclear fusion, the signature process that gives a star its shine
Members of the NASA-funded Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 have created the most complete three-dimensional map of 525 brown dwarfs around the Sun.
The 3D map encompasses a radius of 65 light-years, or about 400 trillion miles, with “close neighbours” inhabiting space within about 35 light-years, or 200 trillion miles.
To achieve this feat, scientists tapped into the worldwide network of 150,000 volunteers. The study has been published in the journals Nature and the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
“Without the citizen scientists, we couldn t have created such a complete sample in so short a time,” said J. Davy Kirkpatrick, a scientist at Caltech/IPAC in Pasadena and lead author of the study. “Having the power of thousands of inquiring eyes on the data enabled us to find brown dwarf candidates much f ....
