The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that officers were justified in firing shots at a fleeing man who earlier fired a shotgun at them during an incident on an Auckland motorway.

The man had escaped from Waitakere District Court, along with another man who was wanted for arrest, two days earlier when he was located by police detectives in Auckland’s Blockhouse Bay on October 19, 2018.
The man fired a shotgun at officers on the Northern Motorway as the pair attempted to escape in a vehicle, which was pursued by officers at the scene and the armed offenders squad, authorities said. ....

Police justified in shooting at man during hour-long motorway chase, report finds

The incident occurred when police detectives located the wanted man in Blockhouse Bay in October 2018.
He had escaped from Waitakere District Court during an appearance on several charges, including aggravated robbery (with a firearm), wounding with intent to injure and assaulting police.
The man fired a shotgun at police in his attempts to escape and was swerving at high-speed in between traffic, the report stated. There was one other man in the Audi with him.
The Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) was called and the two officers involved in the investigation fired four shots at a man as he fled.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that two officers were justified in firing shots at a male passenger in a car fleeing Police to avoid arrest on the Northern Motorway in October 2018. The man had fired a shotgun at Police multiple times during the chase.
The man was a remand prisoner who had escaped from the Waitakere District Court two days earlier where he faced charges, including aggravated robbery (with a firearm), wounding with intent to injure and assaulting Police.
Two Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) officers in a vehicle driving behind at high speed fired separate shots at the man sitting in the front passenger seat of the fleeing car. He suffered minor injuries, and no one else was harmed. Police continued the pursuit, arresting the man and his driver shortly afterward. ....

In September 2019, police were called to a house in the South Auckland suburb of Manurewa, where a drunken man was shouting, swearing and smashing his head against a wall.
When officers arrived, the Independent Police Conduct Authority said the man was asleep on the driveway, snoring loudly.
Once he woke up, he became aggressive and uncooperative. Officers were told he was possibly under the influence of drugs.
The man was placed in handcuffs, but he then tried to bang his head on a fence and hit his head on the concrete driveway, the IPCA said.
He was taken to the police cells, but the IPCA said he should have been taken straight to hospital. ....
