At first glance, itâs easy to assume that Ross Talbott chose to pursue a different direction in life than being part of the family fruit-growing business in Palisade. After all, Talbott moved in 1959 as a young man to the New Castle area, where he ended up building Apple Tree Park, a trailer park that became home to more than 1,200 people, making it, at one time, about twice the population of New Castle was then. But if you stop to think more closely about the communityâs name, it hints at the fact that it was very much rooted in the Talbott family enterprise. ....
Buoyed by a $1 million grant, a recently formed foundation based in Grand Junction is expanding its efforts to fund work to help restore and protect rivers. ....
Memorial Day weekend 2021 was memorable on many fronts, with the return of the Alpine Bank Junior College World Series, the official opening of the lower half of the Palisade Plunge hiking and biking trail, and a celebration of the opening of the River Park at Las Colonias that was delayed by a year due to the pandemic. During Thursdayâs riverfront celebration, Chris Castilian, the executive director of Great Outdoors Colorado, noted that a person could ride a bike from the top of Grand Mesa to the Utah border âbecause of the vision this community collaboratively has put together for an inclusive opportunity to get outside and recreate. Itâs not something you find everywhere.â ....
Colorado West Land Trust was the beneficiary of a large grant from Great Outdoors Colorado on Tuesday. The GOCO board awarded a $133,700 grant to the land trust to support added staff capacity as the community and organization responds to the pandemic. A recent merger expanded CWLTâs service area to six counties, including Delta, Gunnison, Mesa, Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel, required more staff to adequately support the areaâs public and private conserved lands. This grant is part of GOCOâs Resilient Communities program, which helps grantee partners advance outdoor recreation, stewardship, and land protection work. Funded projects respond to one-time, immediate needs or opportunities that have emerged in direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic all within the context of GOCOâs five program values: resource conservation, outdoor stewardship, community vitality, equitable access, and youth connections to the outdoors. ....
Where would the Grand Valley be without the Colorado West Land Trust? Peach grower Harry Talbott has said he doubts there still would be a peach industry here if not for the work the trust has done to preserve productive orchard land from development. If that was the land trustâs only achievement, it would be worth celebrating. But itâs done so much more in the 40 years since it was started by Palisade farmers. It has conserved roughly 125,000 acres of land stretching from the Bookcliffs to the Black Canyon â preserving views, open spaces, multi-generational farming/ranching livelihoods and vast swaths of wildlife habitat. Itâs helped sustain the local food supply and facilitated partnerships to enhance access to public lands and the great outdoors. ....
