There s still snow in Colorado s mountains near the headwaters of the South Platte River, and Brian Domonkos has strapped on a pair of cross-country skis to come measure it.
He s the Colorado Snow Survey supervisor, and knowing how much snowpack is left from the winter to runoff into streams, rivers and reservoirs this summer is crucial, especially in a year when much of the West is in extreme drought. As it melts, the snowpack here will become the primary source of water for millions of people in Colorado and across the West. ....

When Water Is Scarce, Some Researchers Go Underground To Find Out Why

Aspen Public Radio
Elise Osenga maintains one of Aspen Global Change Institute s 10 soil moisture monitors. Researchers use data from stations like this one to figure out how much snowmelt and precipitation will reach rivers and streams.
When it comes to water in the West, a lot of it is visible. Snow stacks up high in the mountains then eventually melts and flows down into valleys. It’s easy to see how heavy rains and rushing rivers translate into an abundance of available water. But another important factor of water availability is much harder to see.
Beneath the surface, the amount of moisture held in the ground can play a big role in how much water makes it down to rivers and reservoirs – and eventually into the pipes that feed homes and businesses. ....

BERTHOUD PASS, Colo. (CBS4) – Spring runoff is usually marked by swelling muddy waterways, but this season things may look a little different.
“We know the soils under the snowpack are so dry that it basically has to absorb so much of that, like a sponge, before it transmits it through to a river channel,” said Karl Wetlaufer, Assistant Supervisor for the USDA-NRCS Colorado Snow Survey.
On Wednesday, Wetlaufer and fellow hydrologist Mike Ardisan, made the trek up to Berthoud Pass, one of Colorado’s 115 SNOTEL sites, to look at snowpack data. ....
