Governor declares Livestock Proud Day March 22
Colorado Livestock Association was joined by Colorado Dairy Farmers, Colorado Egg Producers, Colorado Pork Producers Council, Colorado Wool Growers Association and Rocky Mountain Farmers Union in requesting that Colorado Governor Jared Polis declare March 22 Colorado Livestock Proud Day. The declaration specifically highlights the essential nutrients in beef and emphasizes that livestock convert solar energy into food on marginal lands. It’s a win for the environment because it burns cleaner and it reduces tailpipe emissions in terms of toxic emissions as well as greenhouse gas emissions. And it’s also a win for your wallet and the local economy because it s made from corn that comes from rural Colorado and E15 is usually cheaper by a couple of cents than t ....

Agriculture news: Dietary guidelines get update

Candace Krebs
Newly released dietary guidelines generate mixed reactions
New five-year dietary guidelines, released in late December by USDA, brought strong approval from mainstream beef, dairy and grain organizations, but left other health advocates concerned.
Updated every five years, the guidelines serve as the foundation for federal nutrition policy and shape the recommendations found on USDA s MyPlate graphic.
Nina Teicholz, author and executive director of The Nutrition Coalition, said the new guidelines overlook the fact that 60 percent of the U.S. population already suffers from at least one chronic, diet-related condition.
Ultimately, USDA rejected recommendations from an advisory committee made up of health and medical experts, which advised lower limits on alcohol and added sugars. ....
