Local COVID-19 Survivor to Climb 2,000 Stairs at Coors Field, Honors Father Who Succumbed to COVID-19

DENVER, CO | April 6, 2021
Damian Solorzano lost his father, John Solorzano, from COVID-19 while his wife, daughter and himself were fortunate to beat the virus. Now he plans to climb with his team in the American Lung Association’s outdoor Fight For Air Climb in memory of his dad and raise money to end lung disease and COVID-19.
“My dad had a combination of severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF),” Solorzano said. “He was oxygen dependent the last 12-15 years of his life.”
Solorzano worked directly with COVID-19 patients at Denver Health and St. Josephs as a Respiratory Therapist, seeing firsthand the two patient groups heavily impacted during the pandemic. He is now working as a specialist for Masimo providing technology for hospitals caring for COVID-19 patients. ....

The Fort Collins City Council voted to appoint Melanie on Tuesday, January 12. Melanie is a school psychologist and has served on numerous boards and committees such as the Colorado Department of Education Mental Health Advisory Committee, the Colorado Society of School Psychologists, and the City of Fort Collins Women’s Commission.

In Colorado, Ketamine Becomes Political

In September, amid swirling political controversy surrounding a death in police custody and other high-profile cases, the city council of Aurora, Colo., did something the EMS community might find bewildering: It banned the prehospital use of ketamine.
The resolution, driven by council member Curtis Gardner but passed unanimously, prevents paramedics with Aurora Fire Rescue and Falck Rocky Mountain from using the drug pending completion of a review prompted by the August 2019 death of Elijah McClain a case that drew intensified scrutiny following the 2020 killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
Officers in the case responded to a 9-1-1 report of a “sketchy,” possibly agitated subject wearing a ski mask and ended up struggling with McClain, a 23-year-old Black man, ultimately using a carotid hold that knocked him out. When he regained consciousness, paramedics sedated him with ketamine. McClain then went into cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital and died a few ....
