This past week, June 28 through July 4, Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 103 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.
Minor injuries in national park truck crash
On Tuesday, June 29 at 1:20 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a single vehicle commercial transport truck collision on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park. Emergency crews responded and discovered a southbound Freightliner truck and trailer had failed to negotiate a curve and went into the ditch. The driver was transported by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries. ....

Mountie and paddle boarder extracted by helicopter after heroic river rescue

A Mountie in BC’s Columbia Valley is being celebrated for risking his own life to save another. The police officer, a four-year member of Canada’s national police force and accomplished swimmer, jumped into action on Tuesday to guide a paddle boarder, struggling against the river’s current, safely to shore.
On June 29, 2021 just after 5 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a request to check the wellbeing of a woman, believed to be in distress and paddle boarding the Columbia River. The caller to police had received a phone call from a friend who sounded extremely distressed. She was able to determine that her friend was likely paddle boarding on the Columbia River, having launched from James Chabot Park. ....

CVSAR saves distressed paddle boarder on Columbia
Yesterday evening (June 29) Columbia Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR) was tasked with going to the aid of a paddle boarder in distress on the Columbia River.
CVSAR mobilized a team of swift water members who flew to the location in response.
Support team members also responded on the ground with additional resources. With the aid of RCMP, the subject was located, extracted and handed over to BC Ambulance Service for further care, CVSAR reported on social media today.
“Keep in mind that with this recent heat wave the water levels in our rivers and lakes are high. Even popular float/paddle locations can present real hazards so plan ahead and go prepared,” CVSAR recommends. ....

Columba Valley Search and Rescue strengthens operations
While mountain biking the Johnson Trail in 2020, a child plunged off the edge of Toby Creek Canyon. Although she tumbled 150 feet down the steep and gravelly canyon wall, Columbia Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR) was able to deploy a complex rope system and lift her to safety.
CVSAR gets calls to the canyon at least once a year, while also responding to land, lake and stream emergencies from all over the Columbia Valley. The registered charity and non-profit organization averages 30-40 volunteers who work diligently beside other first responders (primarily the RCMP and BC Ambulance) to offer specialized rope, mountain, avalanche and swift water rescue services. ....
