COLUMBUS, Ind. – Director of Exhibit Columbus Anne Surak briefed the Columbus Parks and Recreation Board on Thursday afternoon about the sequence of events and general developments of this year’s exposition.
The 2021 show consists of three events: a symposium, to which thinkers and leaders in the design field are invited, presentations by exhibit designers on the Exhibit Columbus YouTube channel, and the exhibition itself.
Surak said her organization hopes that as the pandemic eases, the exhibit this summer and fall can once again kick off with a gala party on August 21 in Mill Race Park.
There will be three main areas within the park that will host presentations and they include the entrance, the tower, and the open area. ....

'Columbus Residents Have Lost Faith In Him': Police Chief Demoted In Ohio City a Month After It Saw Two Black Men Killed By Law Enforcement Officers

The blood of Casey Goodson and Andre Hill still stain the city of Columbus, Ohio. Both Black men were killed by law enforcement personnel in two separate high-profile encounters that occurred within weeks of each other in December.
And on Thursday, Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther moved to replace Police Chief Thomas Quinlan, saying he’d lost trust in the top cop’s ability to reform the police agency. Ginther announced that Quinlan, 54, stepped down at his request and said a nationwide search will soon be underway to find his successor. Deputy Chief Mike Woods will serve in an interim role while the city looks for its next permanent police chief. ....

Catholics go beyond pregnancy decision to help mothers after baby's birth

Women facing pregnancy, for example, might be low income or without family support, Cordle said. They might also need assistance because of the isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program, created by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’pro-life committee, helps parishes learn how to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of mothers and their families, Cordle said.
This can be done by praying with women, hosting monthly dinners to celebrate mothers or having a special blessing for mothers and all those in mothering roles at Mass each month, she said. It could also be organizing volunteers to occasionally bring dinner to a family or helping the family find items it needs, like cribs and baby clothes. ....

Experts tell Columbus City Council civilian responders can help police

Sending mental-health experts, crisis mediators and other trained civilians out on some 911 calls that police normally would handle helps reduce violence in the community, several experts said Wednesday night during a virtual town hall hosted by the Columbus City Council.
It also would help free up police officers to do a better job at community policing, they added.
The town hall session, titled, “Establishing Alternative Public Safety Crisis Response,” was the first in a series of six such events the city council has scheduled over the next three weeks as part of reimagining public safety discussion on other possible reforms for the Columbus Division of Police. ....
