Corvallis Museum, more than 20 years in the making, finally opens

The first visitor through the doors when the new Corvallis Museum opened at 11 a.m. on Friday was Freda Vars, and one of the first things that caught her attention was the old Horner Museum sign mounted on the wall of the building’s lobby.
Before Oregon State University closed it down in 1995, the Horner was a local landmark and a cultural touchstone for generations of schoolchildren from around the state, who were bused to Corvallis to gaze at the museum’s assemblage of Oregon Country artifacts and pet Horner mascot Bruce the Moose. (All that touching was hard on poor Bruce, who has now been fully restored and occupies a place of honor in the new museum’s lobby, where no petting is allowed.) ....

Corvallis Manor outbreak over, OHA reports

A large COVID-19 outbreak at a Corvallis nursing home has been declared resolved by the Oregon Health Authority.
According to a weekly update released Thursday by OHA, the outbreak at Corvallis Manor was reported on Nov. 30 and sickened 121 residents, staff members, members of their households or other close contacts. Six people died before the coronavirus flareup ran its course.
The goal: get as many eligible people as possible equal access to a vaccine.  But supply is still low, and officials are pleading for patience. Tina Curry, chief deputy director of the California Office of Emergency Services: We do ask the public, again, if you don t see anything in the coming days to keep trying. The good: Two new vaccine sites open in California aiming to distribute shots for up to 6,000 people a day, seven days a week for eight weeks, all funded by the federal government. These are the test runs for the Biden administration s efforts to create 100 mass vaccination ....

50 years of local NAACP: President Jason Dorsette in conversation

CAITLYN M. MAY
When Oregon was admitted to the Union, its constitution prohibited people of color from living within its borders.
“No free negro or mulatto not residing in this state at the time of the adoption of this constitution shall ever come, reside or be within this state,” it reads.
Those who violated the exclusion clause faced lashings.
“I like to look at history and learn from history because it has a way of explaining a lot,” said Jason Dorsette, the president of the Albany/Corvallis NAACP. “Culturally, the ways in which a lot of Black and brown communities learn is by specifically handing down stories from our ancestors. My hypothesis is that there are so few Black and brown people in the state because before the internet, before Facebook, our ancestors 100 years ago passed down those stories saying, if you’re Black or brown, you cannot go to Oregon.” ....
