(LEAD) Hyundai Motor to replace batteries in Kona EVs over fire risks

- Hyundai Motor Co. said Wednesday it will replace batteries in about 82,000 Kona electric vehicles and two other EV models sold at home and abroad over fire risks, which could cost about 1 trillion won (US$899.7 million).
Hyundai Motor said it will recall 75,680 Kona EVs produced from November 2017 and March 2020 to replace their lithium-ion batteries manufactured by LG Energy Solution Ltd. starting from March 29.
The recall program also includes 5,716 IONIQ EVs and 305 Elec City buses equipped with batteries produced in LG Energy Solution’s Nanjing factory in China, which raises the total to 81,701 units, the automaker said. ....

Hyundai Motor's electric bus catches fire in South Korea

SEOUL (Reuters) - An electric bus manufactured by Hyundai Motor Co caught fire on Monday while in use in South Korea, a fire official said on Tuesday, months after similar fires in electric cars led to a recall to inspect batteries.
No one was injured in the incident, which occurred as the empty bus was returning to the garage after an inspection, an official at the Fire Service Headquarters in the southeastern city of Changwon said.
The maker of the batteries in the bus has not been identified, the fire official said, but local media reports said the Elec City bus was powered by LG Chem’s wholly owned battery division LG Energy Solution’s batteries. ....

Tesla Model X Accident: South Korea to Investigate Cause of EV’s Deadly Mishap

Seoul/New Delhi, Dec 24: South Korea s transport safety agency has launched a preliminary investigation into causes of a deadly accident involving a Tesla electric vehicle, officials said on Thursday. A Tesla Model X caught fire after ramming into a parking lot wall at a Seoul apartment on December 9, killing the car owner who was in the passenger seat, and injuring the designated driver and an employee of an apartment. The designated driver told police that the car went out of control due to unintended acceleration, reports Yonhap news agency. 
Last week, the Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute requested Tesla to submit documents related to the accident to figure out the cause of the accident, said an official of the Ministry of Land, Transport and Infrastructure. The institute, which is overseen by the ministry, will look into whether the accident was caused by sudden unintended acceleration or battery problems, and will examine i ....
