Vaccination Schedule Runs into Chaos

The government s failure to secure sufficient vaccines is leading to chaos at all levels.
From July 26 to Aug. 14, 3.52 million people aged 55 or above were scheduled to get their first Moderna shot. The two Moderna jabs must be administered four weeks apart, so they should be fully inoculated between Aug. 23 and Sept. 11.
But that schedule now overlaps with 7.05 million people between 60 and 74 who are due their second AstraZeneca injections, and most clinics are already fully booked and have to decide which of the two they give priority to.
Currently, any doctor can inoculate a maximum of 100 people in a day and there are not enough medical staff to boost the daily quota. One doctor at a designated clinic said, There s only one doctor in our clinic, so only up to 80 people can be vaccinated in one day. ....

New presidential disease control secretary Ki Mo-ran faces criticism

By Nam Hyun-woo
Ki Mo-ran, the new presidential secretary for disease control and prevention affairs, is facing doubts about her credibility and capabilities to do her job at the new post. The opposition parties are badgering her over her previous remarks, which seem to underestimate the significance of the prompt supply of COVID-19 vaccines in Korea.
Some experts and opposition lawmakers claim that Ki has made politically biased remarks favoring the Moon Jae-in administration and are questioning whether she can provide professional and impartial advice to the president.
During a reshuffle of presidential aides last week, Moon created the new post of secretary for disease control and prevention, and named Ki as the inaugural secretary. Cheong Wa Dae said Moon picked Ki for her expertise in preventive medicine and acknowledging her contribution to the country s battle against the pandemic, as the chair of the COVID-19 countermeasure committee at the Korean Society of ....

Local governments have begun proposing their own COVID-19 measures without sufficient consultation with central government, raising concerns that any moves deviating from nationwide quarantine policies may lead to widespread confusion or weaken the antivirus measures set by the health authorities.
Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung announced Thursday that his provincial government was reviewing the possibility of launching a separate vaccination rollout for residents of the province, using vaccines that have not been introduced into the country so far. ....
