Protests return to downtown Portland
Additional rallies are announced for the weekend, including one Friday in the Pearl District.
Protests erupted outside the Mark Hatfield Federal Courthouse in downtown Portland as fires were set and federal service officers used chemical munitions to move the crowd back Thursday, March 11.
A group of about 50 to 60 people dressed in black were seen ripping down plywood, spray painting graffiti and setting fires. After a while, Federal Protective Officers pushed them back with tear gas and less-lethal munitions.
Over the course of about two hours, multiple skirmishes were seen as protesters set fires, officers extinguished them, then pushed the protesters back again. Tear gas was used outside the federal courthouse and protesters were arrested or detained. ....

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) A 35-year-old man described as “an experienced credit card skimmer” has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for bank fraud.
The case started in April 2018 in New York City, the US Attorney’s Office in Oregon said in a release. Ciprian Simion was arrested there for using fake ATM cards and pins to withdraw cash. Investigators later found about 100 forged debit cards and three forgery devices, KOIN reported.
A grand jury indicted him on more than 200 counts for fraud.
But after the charges in New York, Simion moved to Oregon. In March 2019, Simion and another man, Gabriel Tigmarau, put a credit card skimmer on a Rivermark Community Credit Union ATM in Newberg, along with skimmers at several other ATMs. ....

March 11 2021
A new ShakeAlert notification system for earthquakes is going live in Oregon on Thursday morning.
The system can detect significant earthquakes quickly and send a real-time alert to your phone before the shaking reaches you.
ShakeAlert does not predict earthquakes or how long they will last but it does offer advance warning about quakes that have already started. The system will continue to monitor the shaking until it stops.
You may get more than one of these alerts if it is a large earthquake and continues to grow, said Althea Rizzo of the Oregon Office of Emergency Management. ....

March 09 2021
Department of Homeland Security racked up millions of dollars in fines from two city bureaus irked by iron barricade.
The security fence around the Mark O. Hatfield federal courthouse in downtown Portland is coming down this week.
The fence was originally built in response to protests over racial injustice last summer, has remained in place for eight months and cost more than $200,000. The fence s disassembly marks a symbolic end to the militarized response by law enforcement during one of the longest sustained protests in Portland s history. Through the spring and summer, racial justice demonstrators gathered for more 100 consecutive nights, prompting the Trump administration to send unmarked federal agents in military fatigues to patrol city streets. ....
