Blue Plum Festival a no-go for 2021; organizers give back instead

The Blue Plum Organization announced Thursday that it will not host its annual Blue Plum Festival this year due to continuing concerns related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
In its place, the organization will offer $20,000 worth of small grants through its Blue Plum Gives Back program to âsupport public programs, events and initiatives that stimulate art, music and culture in Downtown Johnson City.â Last yearâs festival was also canceled because of the pandemic.
âThe Blue Plum Organization had really hoped to be able to bring the festival back this summer, but for a festival the size of ours, planning begins 9 months ahead of time,â Board President Jenny Lockmiller, said in an emailed statement. âThere were too many unknowns for the all-volunteer organization this winter, without knowing what the pandemic numbers would be in June. LASD community helps feed families during pandemic

LASD Community Gives Back helps families facing food insecurity.
Every week, former Santa Rita School teacher Trish Mitchell rallies support for the LASD Community Gives Back project, which helps Los Altos School District families grappling with food insecurity.
Led by LASD Board of Trustees member Jessica Speiser and district office employee Jason Carballar, the project has consistently served 40 families per week since May.
“The outpouring of love and support for our own community by our own community has really overwhelmed me,” Mitchell said. “People bring bags and bags of food to my house every day. So every week for about four months, I was taking 40 to 80 bags of groceries to the district office.” ....

After-School All-Stars Hawai‘i provides free after-school and summer programs for middle and intermediate school students. ASAS supports the social and intellectual development of underserved students by providing structured academic support, health and fitness activities and enrichment programs.
