OPINION: A racist system is failing First Nations women. Let us lead the way on domestic violence


Domestic Violence does NOT discriminate.
It doesn’t matter if you re black, white or brindle. It happens in every town, city, state, country around the world!
What does discriminate, however, are the systems in place; systems that are
set up to fail so many women, but especially Aboriginal women.
Discrimination and racism are two of the leading factors when it comes to systems failing Aboriginal women: they are used as a form of power and control which in turn makes them, in many instances, the enabler of violence that results in death.
They are in my view two of the biggest perpetrators of violence, because it is violence! ....

Last year, this video of an Indigenous boy being arrested by NSW police went viral for the violent way that a police officer responded after being sworn at and threatened.  
The arrest happened just days after George Floyd was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis, and there was massive public outcry when the video of this Sydney arrest started circulating.   
But advocates pointed out at the time that these stories weren’t exactly rare, they were just starting to be caught on camera.    ....

Roman Deguchi met his best mate Matt Coe as a teenager when he was invited to join an Indigenous basketball team in inner-city Sydney.
Now after 20-year careers in horticulture and community services for Mr Deguchi and youth work for Mr Coe, the men have founded a venture called Wildflower Gardens for Good.
