Pamelia native plans ultraruns to benefit Lift Up the Vulnerable


The longest races Lars O. Hasseler has completed were half-marathons of 13.1 miles. But the runner who discovered his galloping skills late in life is confident that his planned ultra-marathons will be another in a series of accomplishments involving the sport he discovered in the Army.
And as he strides along, he’ll be raising money for a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian mission that works to prevent the trafficking and oppression of vulnerable children and women in war zones. The mission, Lift Up the Vulnerable, says that in conflict zones such as Sudan and South Sudan, which are marked by violence and extreme poverty, the most vulnerable are kidnapped as child soldiers, sold as sex slaves, and trapped in forced labor. ....

WILLIAMSPORT, Md., May 11, 2021 /PRNewswire/  Potomac Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), has received approval from the Maryland Public Service Commission for two battery energy storage projects in Allegany and Frederick counties, the latter of which will be paired with a new electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging station.
Potomac Edison proposed the two projects in response to the state s Energy Storage Pilot Program, which was established in 2019 to examine new technologies that could have a transformative impact on electric distribution systems. The program required all investor-owned electric utilities to submit at least two energy storage proposals for the commission s consideration. ....

Fire destroys abandoned house, cause under investigation

A Saturday morning fire destroyed an abandoned house near the intersection of Willow Road and Seavolt Road west of Hancock.
According to Hancock Fire Company Chief Robert Hoopengardner, the call came in at 5:22 a.m. for an abandoned house on fire near the intersection of the two roads.
Hoopengardner said when crews arrived, they found a two-story house fully engulfed in fire with most of the house already having collapsed.
No one was injured, the chief said in an email.
“The fire marshal’s office responded,” he said. “It is currently under investigation.”
Fire crews from Hancock, Berkeley Springs, Little Orleans, Great Cacapon, Needmore, Williamsport, Washington County Special Operations responded as did Hancock Rescue Squad. ....
