The BCHL’s 2021 season ended on May 9, while the Merritt Centennials finished up their season with back-to-back games against the Prince George Spruce Kings and Chilliwack Chiefs on May 7-8. MAY 7 – MERRITT CENTENNIALS VS. PRINCE GEORGE SPRUCE KINGS The Merritt Centennials couldn’t level enough shots towards the Spruce Kings net to make life difficult for their goaltender, and fell by a score of 3-0 in the two teams’ series finale. It took a while for the offence to arrive in the first period, but when it did, it was Prince George who got things going. Hunor Torzsok struck as he was able to find a loose puck on a bounce from the wall and levelled a backhander that baffled Cents goalie Josh Dias to make it 1-0. ....
Spruce Kings wallop Chiefs; extend win streak to six SHARE ON: The finish line is in sight for the Prince George Spruce Kings. A two-goal performance from Corey Cunningham led the BCHL’s most northern franchise to a convincing 7-3 victory over the Chilliwack Chiefs on Friday. PG jumped out to a 2-1 advantage after 20 minutes courtesy of Mason Waite and Carter Cochrane who found the back of the net against veteran Chiefs netminder Mathieu Caron. The second period resembled a special-team fest for the lack of a better term. Tanner Andrew evened the score for Chilliwack on the power-play at the 12:56 mark finding a way to light the lamp against Spruce Kings goaltender Aaron Trotter. ....
On the annual East Texas Giving Day event, donors gifted more than $2.7 million to area nonprofits, with Lamar County seeing part of the helping hand. âI am encouraged and humbled by the way this community serves one another and shows up for one another, and it was very obvious with the way PJC was supported during giving day,â said Baleigh McCoin, Paris Junior College Director of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Affairs. âA big, sincere thank you to everyone who donated.â Seven Lamar organizations participated and raised $44,918 for local foundations through 156 donations on Tuesday, many with matching funds. The organizations were PJC Memorial Foundation, Northeast Texas Trail Coalition, CitySquare Paris, St. Josephâs Community Foundation, United Way of Lamar County, Tailored Rides Equine Assisted Therapy Inc and the The Wesley Center at PJC. ....
It kicked off at 6 a.m. Tuesday and runs until 11:59 p.m. The movement started about five years ago, but organizers said momentum for the event has really picked up since the pandemic. There s 259 organizations participating this year, including 22 non-profits from Bowie County. East Texas Giving Day is run by the East Texas Communities Foundation. Last year, it raised about $2.2 million. President Kyle Penney believes they ll raise even more this year. He said many public fundraising events are still postponed due to the pandemic, and they ve also added about 60 new organizations this year. The pandemic has just forced our hand. If you thought you needed to get better at it, now you know. You need to get better at online fundraising because you never know when your not going to be able to pass the plate. So, this has come at a really good time, Penney said. ....
