Society argues Kaipara Harbour should supply sand needs

The Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS) argued that controversial sand mining near Pakiri should be shifted to the Kaipara Harbour or substituted for other sources at a hearing in the Warkworth Town Hall last week.
The hearing comes in the wake of Kaipara Ltd’s application to renew its consent to extract two million cubic metres of sand offshore from Pakiri and Mangawhai over 20 years.
It contends that Pakiri’s sand is required to prevent a shortage of supply for the production of concrete in the Auckland market.

More than 20 million trees and other natives will be planted around New Zealand s biggest harbour in the groundbreaking $200 million Kaipara Moana Remediation project.
Alan Wilcox, a senior manager for the Kaipara Moana Remediation interim management unit, said planting the 20 million trees was the foundation of a new intergenerational approach.
The first plantings are planned this month. They will be the start of New Zealand s biggest large-scale harbour restoration programme - across 6000sq km of land with more than 8000km of waterways.

Northpower has bought the remaining shares of an entity tasked with delivering ultra-fast broadband across Whangārei and Kaipara.
The lines company has bought the remaining shares belonging to Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP) in the subsidiary Northpower Fibre Limited a venture formed to deliver the Government s Ultra Fast Broadband (UFB) initiative to 33,000 homes and businesses across the two districts.

A boy who has been barred from a school bus by a 117-year-old distance rule has been told to apply for an ACC-funded taxi instead.
The decision will cost ACC at least $2300 a year if it agrees to fund a taxi, even though the boy s parents say there are empty seats on the school bus that goes past their gate on Inland Rd, 3.8km from his school at Kaipara College in Helensville.

A car crash claimed the life of one person in Maungatūroto, around 70km south of Whangārei, yesterday afternoon.
A white seven-seater Volkswagen reportedly rolled and landed down a bank on Bickerstaffe Rd around 3.15pm.
St John sent two ambulances, a doctor, a Rapid Response Unit, and a Northland Rescue Helicopter. The Maungatūroto Volunteer Fire Brigade and police also rushed to the scene.
One person in a minor condition did not need to be taken to Whangārei Hospital.
