New principal for Whangaparaoa College
Steve McCracken
Steve McCracken will be the new principal of Whangaparāroa College.
He takes up the position at the start of next term. Currently, Steve is principal of Kaipara College in Helensville – a role he has held for four years. Prior to this, he was deputy headmaster of Westlake Boys.
In announcing the appointment to the school, its board of trustees said that Steve was excited by the many opportunities that came with the significant growth predicted for the college in the coming years.
“His experience in planning the $25m redevelopment at Kaipara College will be invaluable as we plan for the growth of Whangaparāroa College from 1600 to 2500 learners,” the board’s statement says. “He believes in a culture of personal excellence, where learning is valued and celebrated and where individuals and the environment are respected.

A boy who has been barred from a school bus by a 117-year-old distance rule has been told to apply for an ACC-funded taxi instead.
The decision will cost ACC at least $2300 a year if it agrees to fund a taxi, even though the boy s parents say there are empty seats on the school bus that goes past their gate on Inland Rd, 3.8km from his school at Kaipara College in Helensville.

Waimauku resident Jess Williamson, pictured with sons Josh, Jack and Jai, says a high school in the north-west is needed.
The need for a high school in Auckland’s north-west has been “accelerated” after Fletcher Building was granted consent to buy 20 hectares of land for housing. In recent years, suburbs such as Kumeu, Huapai and Riverhead have experienced fast population growth, creating heavy congestion on State Highway 16. It has also led to calls for a high school in the area, as the closest ones are Kaipara College in Helensville and Massey High School in Massey. Both are about a 20km drive from Huapai.
