Outside Gainesville s City Hall, over 30 people from Alachua County, other parts of Florida and even Georgia gathered in the humid evening air to rally in support of the minority transgender community. Many wore shirts that said, we still matter, or stop killing my Black trans [sisters], while others sported eye-catching pink, white and light blue accessories, showing off the colors of the transgender pride flag. Chants, mantras and affirmations, like, all trans lives matter today, tomorrow and always, could be heard across the courtyard and into the city s downtown streets, drawing a bigger crowd as Tuesday evening s event went on. ....
22 May 2021 Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) administration took aim at the City of Gainesville after Gainesville City Hall required proof of vaccination prior to allowing individuals to remove their masks on the premises, stating the action violated “the spirit of the Governor’s Emergency Order 21-81 which prohibits vaccine passports and protects the fundamental rights and privacies of Floridians.” The city came under fire this week after requiring individuals to show proof of vaccination prior to taking off their masks. According to WCJB, individuals who provided proof of vaccination received an orange sticker that identified them as vaccinated. City Manager Lee Feldman described the sticker as “just a visual cue that would allow anybody who was enforcing the mask requirements inside the room to know whether you needed to be wearing a mask or not.” ....

Its green, gold and light red hues geometrically intertwine, creating an intricate reminder of the hands behind its creation: women living in Jerash refugee camp in Jordan. The mask is one of 50 carefully woven, embroidered and shipped from the camp more than 6,000 miles away to The How Bazar, a vintage store located on University Avenue. The special shipment came from a partnership with Sitti Soap, an organization that helps refugee women sell their products. ....
