St. Mary s Health Care welcomed its first baby of 2021 at 4:20 a.m. Collson William Dills, weighing 7 pounds and 2 ounces and 20 inches in length, was born to parents Peyton Miller and Cody Dills. First case of COVID-19 variant reported in Georgia, DPH says Georgia’s first reported case of the new strain of COVID-19 (variant B.1.1.7), which was first discovered in the U.K. and in several other countries, was announced by the Georgia Department of Public Health Tuesday. The person who tested positive for the new variant is an 18-year-old male with no travel history and is currently in isolation at home, according to DPH, who is working on contact tracing and testing. According to the DPH, research suggests that this variant is significantly more contagious than the SARS-CoV-2 virus, but so far, there is no evidence that it causes more severe illness or increased risk of death. ....
Chris Starrs When Jolene O’Brien’s son was an infant, she taught herself the art of knitting and crocheting. Now that her little boy is 45 years old, O’Brien reluctantly assented that she’s got mad skills when it comes to yarn and needles. “I’ve gotten quite good at it,” she said. An Athens resident for the past seven years, the Maine native spends her downtime watching television (“The Queen’s Gambit” was a recent favorite) and creating crocheted goodies for family and friends. “I do it when I have time to sit down,” said O’Brien, who moved to the Classic City from Florida. “I couldn’t tell you how long it takes to make something and I’ve never even considered trying to time it, but it’s not done in one setting. It’s usually a matter of days or weeks, depending on how busy I am. What I like to do in the evenings when the dishes are done is I’ll sit down and watch a movie and crochet.” ....
Athens-Clarke adds Saturday voting date for runoff election Athens-Clarke County has added a Saturday date for voters to cast an early ballot in the Jan. 5 runoff election. The Clarke County Board of Elections voted to add Saturday, Dec.19 as an in-person advance voting option during Wednesday s emergency special called meeting. The Lyndon House Arts Center polling place, open to all Clarke County voters for early voting, will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Dec. 19. The 2021 Athens Twilight Criterium event will take place August 20-21. The two-day USA Crits cycling event is typically held in late April, but it was confirmed to the Banner-Herald Tuesday that the event had been set for a late summer date. We feel this will give us the best opportunity to have an event in 2021 with the COVID-19 vaccine deployment schedule we have at this moment, said Athens Twilight event director Ashley Travieso. The vast majority of our participants are in the general population bracket, which we assume won t be receiving the vaccine until April, with the second shot coming a month later. ....
