Blue Devils' lone senior Clare Reynolds mentors softball teammates | Oswego County

PULASKI â Clare Reynolds became accustomed to riding in the car with her two older sisters to Pulaski High School varsity softball practices to play with and learn under a group of seasoned upperclassmen.
The routine and role have now changed drastically for Reynolds, who drives solo to the field each day as the lone senior and most experienced member of the Blue Devils. The starting shortstop is expected to lead the way this spring for Pulaski, which returns just three total players from the team that captured the 2019 Section 3 Class C championship.
Reynolds has embraced being thrust into the mentor spot at the start for her fourth year on varsity, eager to guide Pulaski in defending its 2019 sectional crown after last season was canceled statewide due to COVID-19 concerns. ....

Jeff Baril told lawmakers Monday that he and other direct care workers shouldn’t have to beg the state for a fair wage for the critical work they do helping their disabled clients with the tasks of daily living.
An Auburn resident, Baril said he was embarrassed when he learned his teenage nephew was earning more working at a fast-food restaurant than what his agency could pay workers who are highly trained and skilled at helping clients with their daily life functions.
“He’s flipping burgers and I’m holding the care of multiple people’s lives in my hands,” said Baril, who trains direct care workers. He and others in the field spoke to lawmakers on the Legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee on Monday as the committee considers legislation that would require the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to increase its Medicaid reimbursement rates. ....

A bill introduced to the Maine Legislature Monday is aimed at combating the workforce shortage in long-term care facilities and home care employees. One of the ways advocates said this could be done is a 125 percent increase in pay for care workers.
I have to work overtime just to make bills, Kaitlyn Reynolds, a direct care worker in Bangor said.
She added that she works anywhere from 12 to 30 hours of overtime a week to make ends meet.
Two and a half years ago we had to condemn the family home we were living in because the repairs were too much. Now we re renting a trailer, she said. ....
