Snohomish County sets record for overdose deaths


The news comes as outreach workers report 7 deaths over the past weekend.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. Snohomish County logged 232 deaths from drug overdoses in 2020, the most in recorded history.
That trend continues in 2021. Outreach workers said seven people died over this past weekend.
The youngest, according to Robert Smiley of the Hand Up Project, was 17 years old.
I just don t know what to do anymore, he said. They just keep getting younger and younger.
Over the past 20 years, the number of overdose deaths in Snohomish County has risen steadily.
Last year s record was a 46% increase from 2019 and a whopping 137% increase since 2010, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner. ....

Just a few weeks ago, dozens of tents and make-shift shelters were stacked next to each other underneath the Interstate 5 bridge along Smith Avenue and right next to the Everett Gospel Mission. 
The location has been a notorious hot spot for homeless campers in Everett and a long time nuisance for nearby businesses. but now the area is largely clear.
“They came and said if we don’t move, we’re going to get arrested,” said a homeless woman who only wants to be called Jessica. ....

EVERETT, Wash. A $4.3 million state grant will pay for new initiatives to provide shelter for about 90 homeless people in Snohomish County.
It will chip away at a shelter bed shortage that officials say has swelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The county plans to spend about $2.4 million of the grant on a new facility in the Everett area to house 50 to 60 people. That will open the way for officials to decommission an emergency shelter downtown. ....
