Vaccine Eligibility Opening To Kentuckians 16 And Older

Starting this week, Kentuckians age 18 and up will be eligible for the Moderna or Johnson and Johnson vaccine, and those as young as 16 years old can sign up for the Pfizer vaccine. Gov. Andy Beshear announced the expansion saying young people are ending up in the hospital. He said they believe this is because of the more aggressive variants. When Beshear originally announced expansion plans, the target date for expanding to younger populations was April 12. The earlier rollout still beats deadlines set by the Biden administration who said last week, 90 percent of Americans would have access to the shots by April 19. Dr. Ryan Stanton says he believes the eligibility will expand to young children by year’s end, citing a recent trial by Pfizer that studied the vaccine children as young as 12 years old. After recently winning second place in General Excellence in their division in the Kentucky Press Association’s 2020 Excellence in Kentucky Newspapers competition, staff at The Sentinel-Echo were named winners once again, this time claiming two top spots in this year’s Best of CNHI competition. CNHI, LLC is an American publisher of newspapers and advertising-related publications with more than 90 newspapers in 22 states. Each year, the company hosts a Best of competition recognizing those reporters, photographers, and staff who work tirelessly bringing news to their communities. Stinking Creek Volunteer Fire & Rescue Dept. No Longer Recognized By The Kentucky Fire Commission

Knox County officials were recently told by the Kentucky State Fire Commission that the commission no longer recognizes Stinking Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department as a fire department. Knox County Judge-Executive Mike Mitchell says that means their official tags are no good, CDL exemption to operate those trucks is no longer enforced and they’re no longer eligible for funding. This left the community of Stinking Creek without fire service. Judge-Executive Mitchell declared a local state of emergency due to public safety. Mitchell said there is an on-going investigation into how the fire department was handled. He said he cannot comment on further details. The local State of Emergency states the East Knox Volunteer Fire Department will pick up Stinking Creek’s 911 calls. Mitchell says the local State of Emergency remains in effect until the problem is resolved. ....

Traffic Stop And Foot Chase Leads To Drug Arrest

Laurel County Sheriff John Root says a traffic stop led to a drug arrest. Deputy Landry Collett and Deputy Justin Taylor pulled a vehicle over just west of London on the Hal Rogers Parkway. As the vehicle stopped the driver, later identified as 51-year-old Junior Wayne Asher of London, jumped out and ran on foot. During the foot chase deputies saw Asher discarding plastic bags from his pocket. Asher ended up falling down an embankment where he was taken into custody. Deputies also recovered the discarded plastic bags containing suspected methamphetamine, Suboxone and marijuana. Asher also was found in possession of digital scales and a glass smoking pipe containing suspected meth residue. Asher was charged with fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, tampering with physical evidence, possession of a controlled substance and others. He was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center. ....
