Southwest Michigan First has taken heavy criticism after the regional economic development nonprofit hired former Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield as its CEO last week. Chatfield, who served as a Republican in the House for 6 years, has taken fire for his policy stances while in the legislature, including in 2019 when he said he would not allow civil rights legislation to come before the House because it would restrict religious freedom. ....

Fueled by a thirst for knowledge and boundless ambition, she became the first Black student to receive a bachelor s degree from Western State Teachers College which would later become WMU in 1927. But the road to get there was not easy. She took the limits off herself, as an African American and as a woman, says Sonya Bernard-Hollins, a Western alumna and founder of the Merze Tate Explorers. Pilot program launched to connect Black and Brown therapists to clients of color Updated Dec 24, 2020; Facebook Share KALAMAZOO, MI Two Kalamazoo organizations have joined forces to pilot a program that would match people of color seeking mental health treatment with providers whose life experiences more closely match their own. Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Kalamazoo (TRHT) partnered with Rootead Enrichment Center to launch the Black & Brown Therapy Collective with the goal of connecting residents to therapists of color. Destigmatizing mental health for the Black and Brown community is a personal passion for Rootead Executive Director Kama Mitchell. Connecting people of color with each other helps eliminate microaggressions or misunderstandings that can be roadblocks during a therapy session, Michell said. ....

The bakery’s last business day is scheduled for Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, the bakery said on its Facebook page. “We are sorry to announce that, after much reflection, we have concluded it is time for MacKenzies’ Bakery to close its doors,” owner John MacKenzie wrote in the post on Facebook. “In the 40 years since my family opened on West Main Street, you have welcomed us into the Kalamazoo Community,” MacKenzie said. “We still treasure the support our customers provided then, and remain grateful for the warm relationships formed over the years.” ....
