UPDATED- Wednesday 5/5/21 8:00 a.m.: KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tuesday, May 4 marked the May election in Michigan, and several items were on the ballots for southwest Michigan communities. Voter turnout was low, as most counties had only one or two items on local ballots. Actual turnout ranged as high as over 30% in some rural areas with school bond issues on the ballot, to as low as under 1% in some urban precincts. Below are the unofficial election results for high profile proposals with all precincts reporting. KALAMAZOO COUNTY: Kalamazoo County voters renewed a school funding millage last night for KRESA. It was the fourth time on the ballot for the Special Education renewal. Kalamazoo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri says voter approval will mean about $12.5-million countywide to help children with special needs. ....

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) Despite former Speaker of the House Lee Chatfield resigning from his new position as CEO of Southwest Michigan First, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners has voted to suspend its relationship with the organization at this time. During a virtual meeting Tuesday night, the Board discussed the matter at length, which had previously been discussed during the last meeting. The issue stemmed from the announcement that Chatfield had been hired as CEO of Southwest Michigan First last month. That decision drew backlash from multiple organizations, including the County Board of Commissioners and the City of Kalamazoo Board of Commissioners. Many cited Chatfield’s stances on LGBTQ-related issues, while others cited his lack of experience for the position. ....

As written, the revenue is .75 mills for eight years, which would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $38 per year. That would help raise about $6.3 million dollars in the first year and about $50 million over the eight year life of the millage. ....
