The Student Government Association has announced its first all-Black executive officers from its recent elections.
The cabinet positions are Kelsey Staes, who is chief justice, Ke’Ron Jackson who will serve as vice president and incumbent L’Oreal Williams for president, who will be serving her second term.
Although Spring 2021 has been a challenging semester, the members overcome the challenges of campaigning during a pandemic. For them, the election remained an exciting and rewarding experience.
“My first reaction to winning the election for chief justice was being shocked. I cried when I found out about the run-off. When it was announced that I had officially won I was just in awe for a few minutes because it was real. I was excited, and it just felt rewarding!” Staes said.
In 40 years, the university has not missed an opportunity to honor and celebrate its students at the Division for Student Affairs Awards Convocation. The SLU Gospel Choir, a musical ensemble of singers worshiping God, was established in 1973 and is known for being the university’s first African-American organization on campus.
Michelle Brister, a senior music major and president of the organization, reflected on her experience in her final semester.
Brister said, “As President, my experience with the SLU Gospel Choir for the past three years has been beautiful. The SLU Gospel Choir or ‘GC’ for short, is my family. It warms my heart that there’s a place in GC where young people can freely sing praises to God. I am proud to be a part of the first Black organization on SLU’s campus.”
