University students shared their advice on summer fashion trends and how they will stay in style while remaining cool in the summer sun. Shelby Durel, a freshman art major, explained what some popular fashion trends are at the moment. “The most popular fashion trends at the moment are flowy dresses for more of a cottage core style, and shorts seem to be going back to mid-rise. Crop tops and bodysuits are still in, but it’s for more a soft look,” she said.

Columbia Theatre to pause productions during summer

In downtown Hammond lies a popular building where locals can sit, have a good laugh, smile and maybe even cry: the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts.  The Columbia Theatre has put on numerous shows and events for and by the university throughout the fall and spring semesters. Over the summer, the Columbia Theatre uses this time to wind down and prepare for the fall productions. Artistic Director Jim Winter shared details about the theatre’s plans for the summer. “It’s a dark time because normally we have some dance shows. We have local community groups that rent the space out, particularly in May and June,” Winter said.

Southeastern Leadership Conference: A decade later

ExCEL Scholars is responsible for the resurrection of the conference. According to ExCEL’s webpage, “The Southeastern Leadership Conference is an opportunity for students to participate in a one-day virtual conference with interactive and engaging sessions on a variety of topics that are relevant to today’s students.” Zachary Rogers, leadership and service coordinator for student engagement, said he does not know what the conference was like pre-COVID. He shared what he thinks the conference may have looked like in comparison to this year’s conference.  He said, “If I had to guess, based on what we had planned before we were told to go virtual, the conference would have been in many big rooms between Fayard, the Union and maybe D Vickers. There would have been presenters in each room talking about the topics that they chose to speak on for the conference.
