Winter Stakes: Bandersnatch thrives with track gallop tactics by Ray Thomas
Sydney s winter wonder Bandersnatch just keeps winning.
Bandersnatch shouldered topweight of 59ky in extremely heavy, testing track conditions but he never looked troubled racing away with the Listed $150,000 Winter Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
The talented Team Hawkes-trained sprinter is in a rich vein of form and could be on the verge of a unique feature race treble.
Bandersnatch has reeled off successive wins in the Civic Stakes and Winter Stakes with connections tempted to keep him going for the Listed $150,000 Winter Challenge (1500m) on his home track at Rosehill Gardens in two weeks – a treble that has never been achieved previously.

Bandersnatch who joined the Hawkes yard at the start of his current campaign proved too good in the Listed Carrington Stakes at Randwick.
Bandersnatch who was previously trained by Gerald Ryan kicked off his campaign with a Moonee Valley win, he then followed that up with two minor placings.
Hawkes said the four-year-old’s record for them should read even better.
“He’s done a fantastic job. He’s had four runs and to be truthful, they probably should have been four wins,” Hawkes said.
“It (Carrington) wasn’t the strongest stakes race of all time but it’s here and it’s about putting horses in races where they’re suited.

A rise to a more suitable distance has Quackerjack poised to rediscover his best form when he tackles the Listed Carrington Stakes at Randwick.
The baldy-faced gelding turned in a creditable first-up performance when finishing just over 2-1/2 lengths behind subsequent Magic Millions Cup winner Eleven Eleven in the Christmas Classic on January 1.
It was the first time the five-year-old had contested a 1200 metre race since his juvenile season and trainer Mark Newnham admitted the horse was out of his comfort zone.

After a Magic Millions carnival he would rather forget, John Sargent is hoping for better luck at Randwick when juvenile filly Perfect Darling lines up for her first start.
Sargent had high hopes for Ballarat Clockwise Classic winner Readily Availabull in last weekend’s $2 million Magic Millions Classic but the horse was scratched when he failed to recover in time from a stone bruise.
The experienced trainer took the setback in his stride and is already looking to his next move with the talented youngster, who he hopes can qualify for the Golden Slipper.
