NDSU Extension Hosting Spring Horse Management Webinars

Horse owners will have an opportunity to learn about spring management during a webinar series North Dakota State University Extension is hosting at noon Central time each Wednesday in May.
Topics will include transitioning your horse from winter to spring and summer feeding, grazing strategies, manure and nutrient management, managing your horses during the drought and the basics of conditioning for performance events.
Due to the current drought, many horse owners likely will be using a dry lot for the summer.
“Manure management will be key to keeping the surfaces dry, dealing with flies and helping mitigate internal parasite issues,” says Mary Keena, Extension livestock environmental management specialist at NDSU’s Carrington Research Extension Center. ....

OPTIONS TO HAY: When drought diminishes pasture and rangeland, ranchers can turn to a variety of coproducts to feed cattle if hay is in short supply.
Turning to milling coproducts may be a viable option for alternative feedstuffs.
Impending drought may make things tight for cattle producers as they look to keep their herd fed, but Karl Hoppe thinks it’s time that cattle producers look outside the box and diversify their feed bunk.
Hoppe, livestock systems specialist at North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center, says livestock producers in Northern climates are quite familiar with feeding cattle in winters and that winter feeding can be transitioned to summer feeding if necessary. He points to the experience of 40 years of year-round drylot cow herd feeding at the Carrington center. ....

BISMARCK, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Agriculture has scheduled free training sessions for produce growers across the state.
“Fruit and vegetable growers and others interested in learning about produce safety, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule, Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), and co-management of natural resources and food safety should attend,” Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said. “Attending a session will satisfy the FSMA Produce Safety Rule requirement that requires at least one supervisor or responsible party on a farm to complete food safety training recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.” ....

Due to the dramatic increase in corn prices, some producers are looking for feeding alternatives.
“When corn is increasing like it has been over the past few months, that has caused our cost of gains to go up, as well as the cost of everything else to go up. So when we start looking for corn alternatives, nothing else is cheaper. It drove the price of everything else up, so that is the challenge people are having right now,” said Karl Hoppe, North Dakota State University livestock systems extension specialist for the Carrington Research Extension Center. ....
