Smithfield targeted for Latter-day Saint temple

Smithfield has been chosen along with 20 other communities for a new temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
In his concluding talk at the church s annual spring conference, President Russell M. Nelson revealed the sites for 20 new temples.
Among the other Western regional locations named were Helena, Montana; Casper, Wyoming; Grand Junction, Colorado; Burley, Idaho; Elko, Nevada ;and Farmington, New Mexico.

âWe want to bring the house of the Lord even closer to our members, that they may have the sacred privilege of attending the temple as often as their circumstances allow,â Nelson told conference listeners. ....

Church leaders address social issues and enourage faith, hope during April 2021 General Conference

Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints addressed several societal issues and provided encouraging words of faith, hope, peace and other gospel principles during the faith’s 191st Annual General Conference held on Easter weekend.
This was the third consecutive General Conference held remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many spoke from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, some general authorities outside the U.S. pre-recorded their messages that were shown during the conference.

President Russell M. Nelson announced plans Sunday for a record-setting 20 locations for new temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 11 of them outside the United States crowning an unforgettably international end to the faith’s 191st Annual General Conference.
A day after leaders called for the church to become the inclusive inn of Jesus Christ, a unique Easter morning session featured another first nine speakers from nine different countries. In all, talks, prayers and music provided for the session came from a total of 13 countries Australia, Brazil, Fiji, Hong Kong (China), Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Philippines, Portugal, South Korea, the United States, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. ....

Though most Latter-day Saints identify as Republicans, no political party, platform or individual candidate represents all the church’s positions, Dallin H. Oaks said on the final day of the 191st Annual General Conference.
“We should never assert that a faithful Latter-day Saint cannot belong to a particular party or vote for a particular candidate,” said Oaks, first counselor in the governing First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “There are many political issues, and no party, platform or individual candidate can satisfy all personal preferences.”
In his opening and closing remarks, President Russell M. Nelson acknowledged the pain and suffering of the global pandemic, praising the members’ “resilience and spiritual strength in the face of illness, loss and isolation.” ....
