Energy: Renewables transition means planning for coal plant closures now

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the closure of coal power stations in Australia so far, it’s that the owners lie about the date.
Back in 2016, the owner of Hazelwood power station insisted it would remain open until the 2030s. Instead, the last boiler was switched off in March 2017, giving workers and the community just five months’ notice.

Even that short timeframe was longer than average. From 2012 to 2017, nine coal power stations in Australia closed and the average notice period was just four months.
These giant energy companies may argue they have been caught out by sudden changes in the market. ....

MIL-OSI UK: expert reaction to announcement that all travel corridors with the UK will be closed from Monday

In the Downing Street Press Conference this evening Boris Johnson announced that travel corridors are to be closed from Monday.
Prof Mark Woolhouse, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology, University of Edinburgh, said:
“The UK government’s decision to close travel corridors and insist on a rigorous test an quarantine policy is not surprising in the current climate of concern about new coronavirus variants.
“The exit strategy from this policy is unclear. 
“Global levels of infection are unlikely to fall significantly in the foreseeable future.
“The virus will continue to generate new variants, some of which may be more transmissible or less preventable using current vaccines. ....
