Facebook Share Alabama’s entire congressional delegation, including its sole Democratic representative, is backing a push from freight train operators for Amtrak to resume its efforts in completing a feasibility study before restoring passenger rail service out of Mobile. A letter submitted to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board calls on the federal board to require the completion of a study that would determine potential impacts to the Port of Mobile if Amtrak service is restored along the Gulf Coast. The letter was signed by all seven of Alabama’s U.S. House members and echoes past comments from Republican U.S. Senator Richard Shelb ....
This year’s market will operate from May 7 until Oct. 1 or 9 in the Borden Friendship Centre from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with set up at 9 a.m. Membership fees are $10, with yearly dues set at $10. Rent is $10 for larger tables and $5 for small tables. Seniors’ centre rental each week will be $50. The Christmas sale in the Borden Community Centre was set for Nov. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., depending on pandemic rules in place by then. The market plans to put up two large signs east of Borden and by the bridge. The board remained the same: president Karen Kerr, vice- president Eileen Petrun, treasurer Connie Kinakin, secretary Lorraine Olinyk and board member Martha Rempel. There is interest in two or three new members joining the market. ....

Now, thanks to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, that list is growing to include infrastructure (according to its true definition, not Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s). During an interview with theGrio’s White House correspondent April Ryan, Buttigieg explained how roads and bridges divide communities along racial lines and said there’s “racism physically built” into American infrastructure. “If you’re in Washington, I’m told that the history of that highway is one that was built at the expense of communities of color in the D.C. area,” he said. “There are stories and I think Philadelphia and Pittsburgh [and] in New York, Robert Moses famously saw through the construction of a lot of highways.” ....
