Visitors to the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, which reopens to the public today (7 May), get a double treat of two very different shows originally scheduled to take place a year apart that together form an interesting diptych of the Western museum:
The Last Supper in Pompeii: from the Table to the Grave, and
Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You Listening? The 18th-century excavations of the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, fuelled the Enlightenment and the establishment of the “encyclopaedic” museum, while the Kenyan-US artist’s site-specific exhibition challenges the colonia ....

When curators talk about contemporary art existing “in dialogue” with another artist’s work, with history or with broader political issues the idea can sound like vague, abstract art world jargon. Isn’t art always meant to spark a dialogue with its surroundings and with the viewer?
This idea of prompting conversations between new and old modes of expression has been the mission of the Legion of Honor’s ambitious contemporary art program since its inception in 2017. Under the direction of contemporary curator Claudia Schmuckli, site-specific installations by Urs Fischer and Julian Schnabel have aimed to shake up conceptions of traditional Western art history by placing work by living artists among the Legion’s permanent Euroc ....

Calder-Picasso connections are thin in San Francisco show

Not all two-artist shows are a perfect coupling. The current
Calder-Picasso exhibition at the De Young Museum in San Francisco, for example, offers only a faint echo of the revelations provided by
Calder Miro at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC in 2004 (co-organised with the Fondation Beyeler in Basel), although a number of significant pieces by Calder appeared in both. But then, the respective artists’ relationships with each other might explain the disparity in depth between the two projects.
Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and Joan Miro (1893-1983) began a lifelong friendship and correspondence from their first meeting in 1928. Calder and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), though long aware of and mostly appreciative of one another s work, met only twice. The guiding spirits of the De Young’s exhibition the artists’ grandsons, Alexander S.C. Rower and Bernard Ruiz Picasso, effortfully seek some new common ground in a dialogue printed in the catalo ....

Our Pandemic Year: 12 months of frenzied fundraising and philanthropy – J.

Part Two of OUR PANDEMIC YEAR, a week-long series examining how the Covid pandemic has changed our local Jewish world.
There was a day last spring when Cindy Rogoway, executive director of Hebrew Free Loan, was really worried. The pandemic had hit, California was on lockdown and scores of people were suddenly thrust into financial insecurity. The S.F.-based organization, which gives out interest-free loans, was deluged with requests.
Cindy Rogoway
“We really found ourselves at this moment in March last year where I was very concerned that we wouldn’t have enough money to meet the needs of the people turning to us,” she said. “We had such a huge influx of applications.” ....
