Smyrna hosts Memorial Day at new site


The Memorial Day wreath laying ceremony in Smyrna featured the new location of the town’s memorial to its military personnel who died in combat.
The town’s memorial was moved to a broad expanse of lawn in Lee Victory Park near the Captain Jeff Kuss, USMC Memorial. The military memorial had been in a somewhat cramped spot in front of the Smyrna Town Hall.
More than 200 citizens and public officials gathered at the Kuss Memorial to hear the guest speaker, Middle Tennessee State University’s Lt. General Keith Huber, U.S. Army, Retired, speak about “remembrance and responsibility.”
“Precious military families you are our heroes,” Huber said. “You are the ones, as a spouse, or a child or a brother or a sister or a mother or a father, whose unconditional love and support allows us the privilege to serve our nation in uniform. You’re the ones who struggle with the day-to-day events, trying to be both mother and father, and wonder ....

General s Fund, Supported by Preds, MTSU, Sees First-Ever Recipient
General s Fund Recipient Says Scholarship Will Help Reach Goal of Becoming Pediatrician

A year after being established, the General s Fund has helped a Middle Tennessee State University graduate student continue her education, as she works to become one step closer to reaching her dreams of becoming a pediatrician.
Keyann Reaves, a Jackson, Tennessee, native and military dependent, was the first to receive support from the fund, which is administered by MTSU s Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center.
Reaves, who sought her degree at MTSU through her father s GI Bill benefits, learned last fall when she couldn t register for classes this spring that her support had run its course. ....
