Why are continued precautions necessary if we've had vaccine?

Dr. Keith Roach
DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you elaborate on how the COVID vaccine is different or inferior, or maybe just not as fully tested from other vaccines? As far as I know, we do not need to continue to take precautions for polio, or the Spanish flu or bird flu those vaccines protect us. Why the need for continued precautions for COVID after being vaccinated? W.S.
ANSWER: The COVID vaccines are new, but the evidence is mounting that in the real world (as opposed to just studies), these vaccines are very safe and effective. Part of the continued caution in the current COVID-19 pandemic is due to the unknown duration of the effect of the vaccine, but much of the concern has to do with just how many people are infected. There is the possibility of a new variant becoming prevalent that might be more contagious, more deadly, less amenable to our therapies or able to overcome the resistance conferred by the vaccines. In fact, there are variants tha ....

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a teacher scheduled to get the Pfizer vaccine on Friday. My mom keeps sending me stuff about why I shouldn’t get it fear of what it will do to the immune system in the future. ANSWER: All the data we have so far and it’s a year of safety data tells us that this is both a safe and effective vaccine. I, and now my whole family, have received the vaccine after I read the safety and efficacy studies. ....

Blood donations are still needed, helpful to many

Dr. Keith Roach
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had both COVID-19 vaccinations and am planning to donate blood. Would any of my immunity pass on to the person receiving my blood? D.J.
ANSWER: Although we may think that blood is taken out of the donor and given whole to the recipient, that almost never happens. After you donate blood, the components are separated out. The red blood cells are given to people with anemia or who are in surgery to replace blood loss. These “packed” red blood cells contain almost none of the immunoglobulins your body has made in response to the COVID-19 vaccines. ....

Dear Dr. Roach: Ear-popping jaw pain stems from TMJ

DR. KEITH ROACH
For the Herald & Review
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have seen several doctors for my TMJ: my primary doctor and dentist, an ear nose and throat doctor, the dental hygienist and also ask Google.
I am a 73-year-old female and have had this problem on the left side of my face for at least a couple of years. It started with pain in my left ear that can last for 10 minutes or all day. Now, for months, when I eat almost anything, my left jaw makes a popping sound. Anybody sitting next to me can hear it. The only thing I do is press my check with my hand to make it stop and continue with a meal. The popping does not hurt, but the ear aching does. ....
