Robberies and assaults against Asian Americans in the Bay Area have them fearful, Asian leaders said at a news briefing earlier this week.
In 2020 in the Bay Area, about 700 cases of racism and discrimination against Asian Americans occurred between March 19 and the end of the year, according to Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition formed to address the issue during the pandemic.
Thirty-five cases were against elderly Asian Americans. Many cases, whether against seniors or others, apparently go unreported.
Our community is fearful of being in public alone, said Cynthia Choi, co-executive director of Chinese for Affirmative Action, which works to protect immigrant rights, promote language diversity, and remedy injustice. ....

OAKLAND (BCN) Mayor Libby Schaaf on Friday tapped a 22-year veteran of the Oakland Police Department to be the agency s new chief.
LeRonne Armstrong, currently a deputy chief, will be sworn in Monday at 10 a.m., ending the tenure of interim Police Chief Susan Manheimer.
This department is looking for a mentor, looking for a leader, Schaaf said in a video announcing her selection of Armstrong. ....

University of California at Berkeley officials on Tuesday stripped another hall of its name, the fourth in a year s time.
Kroeber Hall, which honored anthropologist Alfred Kroeber, was unnamed because he continues to be associated with the ideas of exclusion and erasure of Native Americans. Kroeber is remembered as the founder of the study of anthropology in the American West. ....

Two men were shot, and one suffered life-threatening wounds late Sunday night in Gilroy, police said Monday.
Officers heard shots and police received reports at 11:50 p.m. of a shooting in the area of West Eighth and Hanna streets.
Officers were sent there and found evidence of a shooting but no victims or suspects, according to police. A short time later, two victims showed up a hospital, police said.
One had life-threatening wounds and the other is expected to live.
The shooting is under investigation and anyone with information can call Cpl. Thomas Larkin at (408) 846-0348 or the anonymous tip line at (408) 846-0330. ....
