Juneteenth when Emancipation Day is celebrated nationally is taking a back seat in Florida to May 20, the day the Emancipation Proclamation was first read in Tallahassee.
To honor the occasion, The Village Square, Leon County and the Tallahassee Democrat are partnering to reintroduce the importance of Florida s Emancipation Day during the annual Created Equal event.
Florida Emancipation Day celebrates the day Union troops declared the Emancipation Proclamation effective across the state, thus signaling the freedom of enslaved people specifically across Florida.
Though state statutes still recognize June 19 the official day of emancipation, historians have been advocating for May 20 to become the day recognized across Florida. Proponents say they simply want to be true to the day emancipation occurred in Florida and be specific to local history. ....

The Florida Humanities Council, which promotes history and culture, has created free walking tours of towns throughout the state, and five Tampa Bay area cities are being highlighted on its app.
You can take a leisurely stroll while you learn about Indian Rocks Beach, Safety Harbor, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and Ybor City. They re big dogs that put big smiles on people s faces. Plus, they lift spirits, ease stress and lower blood pressure. That s what George and Zoe, two 7-year-old English Mastiffs do for associates and patients alike at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital.
We re a volunteer organization that uses our pets for pet-assisted therapy, said Joni.
The dogs are wonderful up here, said Tiuana McDonald, an RN in the pediatric unit.
She immediately knelt down to pet George s head who enjoyed the attention once they were brought onto the floor.
We have patients - they re stressed because they are in the hospital and they just need that extra little bit of love and the dogs can offer that, she said. ....
