ROCKFORD Donte Calloway sprinted to the playground at The Grove at Keith Creek Saturday afternoon and was soon down on all fours digging up egg after egg beneath the thick brown mulch. “I got another one,” Calloway, 9, shouted to no one in particular before stashing a prized golden egg into a paper sack. “You’re getting down and dirty, bro,” observed a middle school-aged boy who said his egg hunting days are behind him. The Easter egg hunt at The Grove at Keith Creek, 690 S. New Towne Dr., attracted about 20 children, including a few scattered toddlers. One of the most critical responsibilities of any municipality is investing in and maintaining its infrastructure. In a city the size of Rockford, that means 518 miles of local roads, 216 miles of arterial and collector streets, 82 miles of alleys, 260 traffic signals, 131 bridges and box culverts, 12,399 street lights, three dams, 799 miles of sidewalk, 33,216 street signs and 34,557 inlets and sewer covers. That’s just a few of the highlights of our infrastructure, and residents and visitors may not always realize the amount of complicated work that goes into their maintenance. Each year city staff present to the Rockford City Council an updated Capital Improvement Program (CIP). This rolling five-year document is a road map for the city’s infrastructure investments. In early December, the City Council passed the fiscal year 2021-25 CIP. The current CIP will invest more than $129 million in the backbone that keeps our community stable. ....
ROCKFORD Road funds, pension relief and domestic violence reforms are among the priorities city officials plan to ask the region s congressional and state legislative leaders to pursue. Rockford has compiled a list of 10 priority items for 2021. They range from specific new domestic violence prevention measures that officials would like to see enacted to general requests for economic development incentives and dollars. Compiling the priority list allows the City Council to give direction to the mayor s office, the state s legislative delegation and the city s paid lobbyist. It has proven to be an effective way to get city partners on the same page, Mayor Tom McNamara said. ....
