Grading the Bengals’ 2021 NFL Draft class Just how well did the Bengals draft? It’s time to roll out the true grades. NFL Draft grades aren’t useless, but they are hard to evenly gauge across the internet. Most of them are labeled like traditional letter grades from school, and that scale is based on a numeric system; a system in which a 75 out of 100 is deemed “Average,” and a 50/100 is “Failing.” Just typing it out makes me question what the first 22 years of my life were actually based on. And when I look at draft picks immediately being labeled as Cs, Ds, and Fs, it just feels more harsh than it should. ....
Bengals look to strike 4th-round gold again with 3 opportunities Geno Atkins is the shining example of Bengals’ success. David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports The NFL Draft has not always been good to the Cincinnati Bengals. Or maybe it’s just that the Bengals have not been all that good at the draft. Like most teams, Cincinnati has its share of first-round successes, although there have been a number of busts, as well. Since 2000, though, not many teams have had the type of fourth-round success the Bengals have enjoyed. Everyone knows about Geno Atkins, the Georgia defensive tackle Cincinnati selected with the 120th pick in 2010 NFL Draft. But there have been a number of other shining examples, as well. ....
Photo by Don Juan Moore/Getty Images After the Cincinnati Bengals took Cameron Sample in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Jon Ledyard of Pewter Report compared Sample to Carl Lawson. “Might not be a bigger Cam Sample fan than me,” he said on Twitter during the draft. “I compared aspects of his game to Carl Lawson, so no surprise that Cincy is the team that selects him in this draft.” Might not be a bigger Cam Sample fan than me. We heard rumblings about 24 hours before the first round that the Cardinals were likely to take Collins, though he was someone expected to go in the mid-to-late 20’s. Could they have traded back and landed him? Maybe. But his versatility combined with that of Isaiah Simmons and Budda Baker make this a tough defense to play against. Moore makes so much sense in the second round, as we still don’t know if Larry Fitzgerald will return. No matter what, he’s a perfect fit to play the slot in their offense. I liked Gowan better than Wilson, so getting him two rounds later saved their score a bit, as Wilson seemed like a bit of a reach. If there’s one thing I would’ve liked to see them do, it was to add a nose tackle seeing as many of them fell much further than expected. ....
Cameron Sample draws comparisons to Carl Lawson The Bengals find another Carl Lawson-type in the fourth round. The Cincinnati Bengals opened the fourth round by taking Cameron Sample, a defensive end from Tulane. Joseph Ossai fell to the Bengals in round three, and will provide some much needed depth on the edge. The Bengals doubled up on the edge with Sample, who they selected with the 111th pick of the draft. Sample is already drawing comparisons to another defensive end the Bengals took in the fourth round of the draft. According to John Ledyard, sample could be the next Carl Lawson. ....
