Coronavirus can’t stop Tom Rush. The longtime folk musician recently celebrated his 80th birthday after surviving a scary bout with COVID-19 and an unexpected health after-effect. Now, Rush is back to doing what he loves and playing music for his fans every Sunday morning as part of his new “Rockport Sunday(s)” video show on the Patreon subscription service. “I’m on the other side of it and everything is good,” Rush says about his battle with coronavirus. “I’m having a good time. This ‘Rockport Sunday’ thing has been a lot of fun.” In recent years, Rush has played at TCAN, The Center for Arts in Natick, the Cary Memorial Building in Lexington, and Payomet Performing Arts Center in North Truro and for two or three consecutive nights each year at Cotuit Center for the Arts, and elsewhere in the Bay State. What would have been his 2020 shows have been tentatively rescheduled to this year on April 23 at the Cary in Lexington; May 28 at the Narrows ....
“Electric Garden of Unearthly Delights” (through June 1) showcases “luminous glass” by Mundy Hepburn, who works with the same scientific principles used in television and fluorescent light to create art. He fills blown-glass forms with gas mixtures such as helium, neon, argon, krypton and xenon, then activates it all with high-frequency static electricity. The result is described as “a kaleidoscope of swirling patterns of multicolored light.” Connecticut native Mundy’s “moving, living art” has been exhibited in over 30 installations.
“Fritz Glass” (through Oct. 31) highlights the work of featured artist Fritz Lauenstein, who, after studying glass-blowing in Maine and Vermont, set up his studio in Dennis in 1990. He creates both functional and decorative glass, including marbles, paperweights, perfume bottles, jewelry, vases and bowls. His work has been shown and sold in museums and over 200 galleries. ....
Musician Gabriella Simpkins is making the most of her time at home during the coronavirus pandemic. The young singer/songwriter from Hyannis has been quietly growing momentum through her various performances on social media. A winning a recent grant for recording and streaming equipment is setting her up for a breakout 2021. Her next online performance is Saturday as part of ONCE Somerville’s “My Synesthesia Valentine” virtual concert, featuring Massachusetts-based musicians performing songs with lyrics exploring the connection between love and the five senses. “I have a whole bunch of songs that I’m sitting on so I would like to get those recorded sometime soon,” says Simpkins, 19. “It’s a New Year’s resolution that something will be recorded.” ....
Passim awards grant to Roslindale singer Community Content Passim recently awarded $40,141 in grants to 24 musicians through its Iguana Music Fund, including Roslindale singer and multi-instrumentalist Sadie Gustafson-Zook. The Iguana Music Fund awards grants annually to musicians for career building projects and for projects that provide community service through music. Established in 2008 after an anonymous donor approached Passim with the idea to start a program to support local artists’ career growth, the fund provides grants from $500 to $2,000 for musicians with a “strong New England connection.” Grants are allocated in the areas of recording or manufacturing assistance, publicity and marketing support, equipment and instruments, songwriting retreats, tour support, special projects and other specific activities that promote artists work and/or professional growth.
