During its recent meeting, the Captiva Community Panel received updates on the iguana MSTU petitions and needed funds it has been seeking to proceed with two projects tied to its committees.
On April 13, Administrator Ken Gooderham told that panel that Treasurer Tony Lapi and Panel Member John Jensen recently manned an informational booth at the post office to educate property owners on the MSTU being proposed to pay for iguana control services and to gather petitions.
He thanked them, noting that their effort resulted in the return of a few more petitions. ....

On Dec. 10, the Captiva Island Historical Society commemorated the 105-year history of Captiva’s iconic The Island Store, as part of the Bailey family reopening ceremony.
CIHS Board President Tom Libonate opened the ceremony with remarks featuring highlights of the various roles the building has played in the island’s colorful history since it first appeared on the county tax role in 1915.
“Starting as Mrs. Miller’s boarding house, the building has been a beauty parlor, a dormitory for younger classmen of the Snyder School for Boys, a general store, a restaurant, hurricane shelter, architect’s office, polling precinct and rumored at one point to even feature a brothel,” he said. ....

The Captiva Community Panel approved next year’s budget and elected candidates for two seats opening up in January at its recent meeting, as well as heard an update on the iguana control MSTU.
On Dec. 8, President David Mintz and staff presented a proposed budget for 2021 that consisted of $65,000 in revenues and $75,000 in operations expenses, resulting in a deficit of $10,000. The budget proposed for 2020 was also unbalanced, with $92,000 in revenues and about $103,938 in expenses.
During discussion, he explained that all or part of the funds budgeted for some expenses may not be needed in the end, like the $16,365 for the Sidewalk Engineering Committee, $14,000 for the Sea Level Rise Committee and $4,000 for the Captiva Code/Ordinance Committee, based upon various factors. ....

A local artist wants his art to inspire you to take action.
Gulfshore Life Magazine just named Naples artist Paul Arsenault one of its Men of the Year, partly because of his role as an activist.
During our 2018 water crisis, Arsenault went from painting to helping raise money for groups like the Calusa Waterkeeper, which lists algae as one of its top priorities. Today, he’s focused on something called the “Rights of Nature,” which legally protects ecosystems.
His true activism started long before, at the first botanical garden in our area, the Naples Zoo. ....
