Remembering Capt. Nichola Goddard — 15 years after Canada's first female soldier died in combat

On May 17, 2006, Capt. Nichola Goddard had just made history. In the last hours of a battle with the Taliban west of Kandahar in Afghanistan, Goddard and her team had executed high explosive and illumination fire missions in support of Canadian troop manoeuvres against a known enemy — the first time a Canadian soldier had done so since the Korean War more than 50 years earlier.
However, a chance ricochet of shrapnel struck Goddard in the back of the head on May 17, killing the Calgary soldier instantly. Capt. Goddard became the first combat-certified female Canadian soldier to die in a combat role. ....
