Teen rows 1000km, raises more than $20k for breast cancer

A teenager has completed a mammoth feat - rowing 1000km around the top of New Zealand.
Nineteen-year-old Ben Mason's spent three weeks at sea raising more than $20,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation.
It's a cause close to his heart, after it took his mum's life when he was six years old.
Reporter Louise Ternouth with camera operators Marika Khabazi and Nick Monro were there to see him reach dry land.

Yacht sinking that killed Stuart Pedersen leads to rule change


The sinking of a yacht which left the skipper - an ACT Party candidate - dead could have been avoided if storm covers were fitted to the cabin windows, a Maritime NZ report has found.

Essence foundered in heavy seas off Cape Brett in Northland on 14 October 2019 on a return sailing to New Zealand from Fiji.
The skipper, Stuart Pedersen, died after it started taking water and sank 37km from the Cape. His wife and two others were also on board. ....

The Government is throwing its support behind an
ambitious project to restore native biodiversity and build
long-term conservation careers, Conservation Minister Kiri
Allan says.
Predator Free Bay of Islands aims to
eradicate predators from the three main peninsulas in the
region, and significantly reduce their impact throughout the
wider 80,000-plus hectare Bay of Islands area.
“A $4
million investment through Jobs for Nature (Mahi mō te
Taiao) will enable Predator Free 2050 Ltd to help iwi,
hapū, landowners and community groups progress their vision
of a predator free Taitokerau,” Kiri Allan said.
The
project has a budget of $15m through contributions from ....
