ICU beds 'maxed out' at Halifax Infirmary as capacity increases across province

Posted: May 13, 2021 7:06 PM AT | Last Updated: May 13 Nova Scotia Health is taking steps to temporarily expand its ICU bed capacity across the province as critical care beds at the Halifax Infirmary are occupied.(Robert Short/CBC) Nova Scotia is setting a plan in motion to expand its capacity for high-acuity beds as the number of COVID-19 patients requiring critical care continues to surge. On any given day, there are about 98 beds across the province designated for critical care. If needed, that number can be more than doubled  to 229  through Nova Scotia Health s provincial escalation plan. The modelling says we won t get to that number, and that won t be needed across the province, said Dr. Tony O Leary, the province s medical director for COVID critical care.

Cape Breton man charged for pulling a knife at COVID-19 testing centre: Police

  HALIFAX Police in Cape Breton have charged a man in relation to a disturbance at a COVID-19 testing centre in Sydney, N.S. on Wednesday. Police say they received reports that a man was yelling and throwing things at people in line for a COVID-19 test at Centre 200. When someone approached him, police say he pulled out a knife before running away on George Street. No one was injured. Officers located the 31-year-old man from Sydney Mines quickly thereafter on Prince Street, where a witness of the incident was able to confirm his identity. Police also located a pocket-style knife on the ground nearby.

Brett MacDougall, executive director of operations for the health authority s eastern zone, said the regional hospital normally has three in-patient beds set aside for people infected with the virus, but there are now four positive patients.
