Gone are the days where someone would greet you and collect your cash at the tollbooth. COVID-19 brought a new era of cashless tolls and Lee County wants it to stay that way.
But the change could cost you an additional $2 every time you pass a tollbooth in Southwest Florida.
The cashless system may become permanent, doubling prices for some drives.
However, the county is offering a solution so people don’t end up with higher tolls.
As long as you get a transponder, the toll to cross the Midpoint Bridge, the Cape Coral Bridge and the Sanibel Causeway would remain the same. ....

The estate of a Naples man who fell overboard during a December dinner cruise in Fort Myers and died has filed a lawsuit against a Lee County security company, according to court records.
The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday on behalf of the estate of Joel Henderson, a 37-year-old Naples man, who fell overboard the Capt. JP riverboat and into the Caloosahatchee River.
The lawsuit was filed against Suncoast Security in front of Lee Circuit Judge Alane Laboda.
Henderson was attending a “Nightmare Before Christmas Brews Cruise” on the vessel on the evening of Dec. 4.   ....

About 7:40 p.m., Henderson was walking down a flight of stairs on the vessel when he slipped and fell over the railing and into the Caloosahatchee River, according to the lawsuit.
A “haphazard search” was organized using the staff of the vessel and employees of Suncoast Security, but Henderson could not be located, according to the lawsuit.
Coast Guard crews searched 11.5 hours between east of Cape Coral Bridge and west of Highway 41 into the following day. Additional agencies assisted in the search, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Fort Myers Beach Police and Lee County Sheriff s Department. ....

The family of a Naples man who fell off a riverboat during a dinner cruise in Fort Myers is suing the security company for negligence.
The body of Joel Henderson, 37, was recovered in the Caloosahatchee River on Dec. 9, a week after he went overboard from the Capt. JP riverboat.
The plaintiff, listed as the Estate of Joel C. Henderson, is suing John Fraioli, owner of Suncoast Security, for negligence, saying the company’s employees were not adequately trained to respond to man-overboard situations. They’re asking for more than $100,000 in damages. ....
