CHC votes to landmark St. Augustine’s African Orthodox Church Community Content The Cambridge Historical Commission voted unanimously to recommend landmark status for St. Augustine’s African Orthodox Church, 137 Allston St., and to forward the recommendation to the City Council for approval. St. Augustine’s was the home church of Bishop George A. McGuire, the founder of the African Orthodox church, a denomination for Black worshipers administered by Black clergy. By 1934, the church had 30,000 members in approximately 30 congregations in Africa, the U.S., West Indies and South America. “And now we march on and continue the great work that we have begun. May God bless you all,” said Rev. Kit Eccles, St. Augustine’s minister, who responded to the vote. ....
