Why are people so willing to respond to the call of religious authorities in Pakistan?
The last couple of weeks have been extremely fateful. The preemptive arrest of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan’s (TLP) chief set into motion a chain of events that jolted the nation and put a question mark on the state’s capacity to save
itself, let alone protect the lives and property of the public.
In hindsight, the state’s approach to tackling the TLP has been full of contradictions. The recent problems are rooted in the French president’s support of
Charlie Hebdo magazine to republish blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The TLP had demanded that the French ambassador be expelled from Pakistan to show the state’s disapproval of the French president’s position. ....

Farooq Tariq, general secretary of the Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee, a network of peasant organisations in Pakistan, outlines an activist’s life.
Activists have to pay the price for speaking the truth
I take pride in having fought against four military dictatorships. I participated in the students’ demonstrations against Gen Ayub in 1968-69. During Gen Yahya’s martial law, I joined protests and strongly condemned the military operation in East Pakistan.
Gen Zia’s reign was particularly tough for me. I had to spend eight years in exile. I was chased for organising demonstrations against Gen Zia’s dictatorship and for writing articles criticising his policies. In 1977-1978, I was warned that I had been spotted by the regime’s informers and was likely to be arrested and subjected to state excesses. I had no option but to go in exile in the Netherlands where I would remain 1978 to ’86. ....

Power games - Newspaper - DAWN.COM

The writer is author of The Bhutto Dynasty: The Struggle for Power in Pakistan.
COMPARED to other Pakistani civilian leaders Imran Khan has had it easy. Although there may have been tension between him and the army, he has never had reason to fear that his government was about to be overthrown.
That is something others have not enjoyed. Right from the start of his time in power, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was on a path of confrontation with the military. He always believed the most significant threat to his holding on to power was a military coup and he devoted considerable amounts of his political capital to trying to avoid that outcome. One of his last prison cell requests was for books by the German wartime dictator Adolf Hitler. He said he wanted to understand how Hitler, unlike himself, had been able to control his generals. ....
