After Myanmar’s military coup on Feb. 1, some military personnel have joined the civil disobedience movement and left the armed forces.
The National Union Government (NUG), a shadow cabinet formed to rival the military regime, has urged personnel to mutiny and join the NUG’s People’s Defence Force.
It is widely believed that a counter-coup by disgruntled military officers or a large-scale mutiny could resolve the crisis.
However, analysts say any major mutiny is unlikely because of the leadership’s tight grip on personnel, including their families. Generally, the immediate family of personnel live inside military camps. ....

The on-going Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) in Myanmar against the imposition of military rule on February 1, has assumed unprecedented proportions. Possessing illegally imported walkie talkies is one of them.  And despite the mass turn out in demonstrations across the country, military action a la Tiananmen Square seems unlikely.       ....

Military veto coups have been prominent in countries where armed forces have played leading roles in society like Myanmar and Thailand the two countries which have experienced their fair share of coups. The latest putsch occurred on Feb 1, in Myanmar. With Myanmar s military having had a long and close relationship with Thailand s armed forces, and both countries militaries prone to staging coups, one wonders to what extent Myanmar s putsch can be explained in the context of the history of coups in mainland Southeast Asia. Does Myanmar follow the Thai model? ....
