Austin school district plans to cut 200 jobs through attrition

Austin school district officials say that they are planning to eliminate at least 200 teacher and campus administrative jobs as student enrollment declines.
District officials told the American-Statesman they are not planning to lay off workers but instead hope to eliminate positions as teachers and campus administrative staff retire or leave the district.
The prime reason for the move: enrollment is expected to drop by nearly 3,000 students from pre-pandemic levels to next year s school year, according to Leslie Stephens, the district s human resources chief. That means a shortfall in state money for the district, allocated on a per-student basis.
No child should see any reduction in services, she said. This is more of a shifting of (full-time employees) than actual losses. ....

There is no explanation for the governor s action other than trying to distract us and the media from the failure of the state to protect us from the power outage. At the beginning of this pandemic, Governor Abbott said he d be guided by the science and data and yesterday he broke that promise, said Mayor Steve Adler.

Austin area schools to keep mask rules despite end of Texas orders

Most Austin-area school officials say they will continue to require students and staff to wear masks in their facilities despite Gov. Greg Abbott s executive order Tuesday lifting state-mandated rules for face coverings.
The Texas Education Agency on Wednesday updated its pandemic-related guidance for school districts but kept its regulations on masks in place. According to the guidance, a school board has the ability to modify or eliminate the agency s mask requirements at their respective districts.
Shortly after Abbott announced the order ending the statewide mandate, which will come into effect March 10, Austin school officials said t it plans to keep its rules related to masks in place. ....

Austin food trucks, nonprofits serve residents recovering from Texas freeze

Cathy Brown said she wasn’t sure what the food truck outside the Garfield Community Library in eastern Travis County was serving, but a warm meal for her family of three and her two elderly parents was welcomed.
Olaya, a food truck serving Peruvian cuisine, parked outside the library for a few hours Monday afternoon and handed out free hot meals and Monster Energy drinks to community members in need.
The mobile eatery was one of dozens of food trucks across the city that handed out free food to residents and families in the wake of the stormy Texas freeze that left many without power or water in the past several days. ....

Many teachers who are at increased risk for severe COVID-19 illness have long feared going back into school buildings.
But as district leaders try to reopen buildings amid the ongoing pandemic, they’re often forced to weigh requests for medical accommodations with the need to staff classrooms

This high-stakes balancing act is currently unfolding in the Austin Independent school district. In the fall, about 1,200 high-risk staff members there were approved to work remotely. But they had to resubmit their requests for accommodation for the spring semester and so far, just 93 staff members have been approved to continue working from home. ....
